REASONS TO CHOOSE OPEN PLAN OVER PRIVATE OFFICE

Save money by reducing space usage
Studies have shown that an 8’ by 8’ (64SF) workstation is sufficient to get most office work done painlessly. But, to build one private, enclosed office, a minimum space of 10’ by 10’ (100SF) is needed. In addition, open plan workstations can be clustered to minimise movement area by 25%. To cite an example, four workstations of 64SF each take up 256SF in total. Four small offices need additional 25% space for movement, which is a total of 500SF. This means there is a difference of 244SF, 61SF per person. If this office cost RM25 per SF per month, then choosing private offices will cost an additional RM1525 every month.

Improve team communication
For office staffs that need to communicate with each other frequently, the benefits of clustered workstations are massive. Open plan workstations are great for employees who need training or supervision from other more senior employees, or for a team working on some highly creative or intense project that calls for constant exchange of ideas and thoughts.

Increase flexibility
With open plan system furniture, every employee gets a workstation that is standardised. So, when employees need to switch places when a new colleague comes in or an old one leaves, they just move themselves, rather than moving the workstations around. Provide openness for light, views and air-flow
Most offices are set up near the windows on the outer edge of an office floor. This kind of perimeter layout makes ventilation and air-conditioning more difficult. Technically speaking, wind and sun make the inside temperature within five feet of the office outer wall fluctuate up to 5°C during the day. Closed offices – in contrast to the large volume of air in an open plan space – mean that more duct work, fans and cooling units are needed to move that heat away.

Control and adjustability
Employees who have access to adjustable chairs and keyboard trays are more satisfied and have higher productivity. This is due to their ability to tailor surrounding working conditions and environment to their liking, thus reducing stress and discomfort. Also contributing to this aspect are factors such as proper equipment to perform tasks, adequate storage for materials and tools, and a workstation layout that is suited to individual employees’ size, height and reach. All these features are available indefinitely with the open plan workstation.
